Bandwidth Throttling

Bandwidth throttling lets you limit how much network bandwidth AXIS CloudSync uses for syncing and backups. This prevents the sync client from saturating your office internet connection during business hours while allowing full-speed sync overnight.

Why Throttle Bandwidth

When AXIS CloudSync syncs large files or performs initial backups, it can consume significant bandwidth. In office environments with shared internet connections, unrestricted sync traffic can slow down other business applications — VoIP calls, video conferencing, and web browsing.

  • Prevent sync traffic from impacting business-critical applications.
  • Ensure consistent performance for all users on shared connections.
  • Allow full-speed sync during off-hours (nights and weekends) for large backups.
  • Comply with IT policies that restrict bandwidth usage during business hours.

Org-Wide Throttle Policy

  1. 1In the Admin panel, navigate to Settings → Bandwidth Policy.
  2. 2Enable Organization Bandwidth Policy.
  3. 3Set the Upload Limit in KB/s or MB/s (e.g., 1 MB/s during business hours).
  4. 4Set the Download Limit in KB/s or MB/s.
  5. 5Optionally configure a schedule so limits only apply during certain hours (see Scheduled Throttling).
  6. 6Click Save Policy. The settings will be pushed to all desktop clients.

Note

Setting a limit of 0 means unlimited. Leave the download limit at 0 unless you have a specific reason to restrict downloads — most bandwidth concerns are upload-related.

User-Level Settings

If no org-wide policy is set, individual users can configure bandwidth limits on their own desktop client:

  1. 1Right-click the AXIS CloudSync Tool icon in the system tray.
  2. 2Select Settings → Bandwidth.
  3. 3Set upload and/or download limits.
  4. 4Click Save.

Tip

If an org-wide policy is set, it overrides user-level settings. Users can see the applied limits but cannot change them.

Scheduled Throttling

Scheduled throttling lets you apply different bandwidth limits at different times — for example, restrict bandwidth during business hours and allow full speed overnight.

  1. 1In the Bandwidth Policy settings, click Add Schedule.
  2. 2Set the days and time range for the schedule (e.g., Monday–Friday, 8 AM–6 PM).
  3. 3Set the upload and download limits for that time window.
  4. 4Add a second schedule for off-hours with limits set to 0 (unlimited).
  5. 5Click Save.

Recommended Settings

ScenarioBusiness Hours Upload LimitOff-Hours Upload Limit
Small office (< 10 users, 50 Mbps connection)5 MB/sUnlimited
Medium office (10–50 users, 100 Mbps connection)2 MB/sUnlimited
Large office (50+ users, 500 Mbps connection)10 MB/sUnlimited
Initial large backup (one-time)Unlimited (run overnight)Unlimited

Tip

Start with a conservative limit and increase it if users report slow sync performance. Monitor your router's bandwidth usage to find the right balance for your environment.
