How Versioning Works
Every time a file is saved or modified, AXIS CloudSync automatically creates a new version. Previous versions are stored in the cloud and are accessible at any time from the web portal. You can view the full history of any file, compare versions, and restore any prior version with a single click.
- Versions are created automatically — no manual action required.
- Each version is stored with a timestamp and the name of the user who made the change.
- Restoring a version does not delete the current version — it becomes a new version in the history.
- Deleted files are retained in the trash for up to 30 days (or per your plan's retention policy).
Viewing Version History
- 1Log in to the web portal and navigate to the file.
- 2Right-click the file (or click the action menu ⋯).
- 3Select Version History.
- 4A panel will open showing all versions of the file, with timestamps and the user who created each version.
Tip
Restoring a Previous Version
- 1Open the Version History panel for the file (see above).
- 2Find the version you want to restore. Use the timestamp and user info to identify the correct version.
- 3Click Restore next to that version.
- 4Confirm the restore when prompted. The selected version will become the current version of the file.
- 5The previous current version is saved as a new entry in the version history, so nothing is lost.
Note
Restoring Deleted Files
Files deleted from AXIS CloudSync are moved to the Trash and retained for up to 30 days. You can restore them at any time during this window.
- 1In the web portal, click the Trash icon in the left sidebar (or navigate to Files → Trash).
- 2Find the deleted file. You can search by name or filter by deletion date.
- 3Right-click the file and select Restore.
- 4The file will be restored to its original location.
Important
Ransomware Recovery via Version Rollback
If your organization experiences a ransomware attack, AXIS CloudSync's version history allows you to roll back all affected files to a state before the attack occurred — without paying a ransom.
- Ransomware typically encrypts files and overwrites them with encrypted versions. Each overwrite creates a new version in AXIS CloudSync.
- Administrators can perform a bulk rollback across all affected files to a specific point in time.
- This process can recover thousands of files in minutes.
Important
Version Retention Policy
The number of versions retained and how long deleted files are kept depends on your organization's plan and administrator settings. Contact your administrator or refer to your plan details for specifics.
- Standard plans retain versions for 30 days.
- Extended retention plans are available for organizations with longer compliance requirements.
- Administrators can configure retention policies in the Admin settings under Storage & Retention.
